Utter! spoken word

‘Utter!’ – Spoken word events, MisGuided tours and more…

Spoken word with a good sense of humour, comedy with a poetic sensibility

“prepare to be left speechless by the tongues of these capable bards” – **** ThreeWeeks.

‘Utter!’ grew out of a community writing group started in Wood Green, North London, in 2002. In 2004, we put on our first successful live shows above the Lordship pub featuring writing group members alongside more established spoken word acts like Abe Gibson, Steve Tasane and Rosemary Harris, and music and comic poetry acts like Ritchie Scurvey. The night was co-hosted by group Co-ordinator Richard Tyrone Jones and Lee Nelson from Luton.

Almost ten years later, with Richard as Director we have put on events in Edinburgh, London and Luton, working with Hackney Empire, Museum of London, the Arts Council and Wellcome Trust to put on slams, MisGuided tours and Richard’s UK-wide solo show tour.

Each of our events has a different theme, such as Utter! Sickness, Utter! Evolution, Utter! Prime Numbers or Utter! Poetry Comedy Bingo. We have put on big names such as Joe Dunthorne, Tim Key and John Hegley whilst helping to launch the careers of fresh poets such as Rob Auton in our Paid Gig contests. In these the audience votes for who will return next month to do a full paid slot – with finals every ten contests with a cash prize of £100 (adjusted for inflation!)

We are happy to be commissioned to put on an event for your festival or venue. For more details please see the website www.utterspokenword.com
